Steps

Old and forgotten.

Another Busy Week

This week/weekend was pretty busy. We are now down to about 4 weeks to implement our project at school and things are starting to get a little rushed. We actually had to start assigning ourselves small homework assignments this past week.

Tuesday night we had a softball game and it was amazing! We were tied in the 5th inning and had a chance of winning the game! Even though we did not win, we only lost by 4...our best game ever by far. Everyone had a really good game. I was proud. I wish more of our games could be like this one was. After the game we headed out to Silky's I could only stay for a quick beer since I had to get home to finish up wire framing.

Wednesday night was YPO night at the Pirates game. We had a tailgate before the game and there were probably about 50 people there! I think this might have been our best event yet. The group I was with did not even make it in to the game until the 4th inning... The Pirates even won that day so that made it even better. We will have to plan another one of these games soon.

Thursday was HCI happy hour at Shady Grove. It was nice but I could not stay long because I had to go meet Leslie in East Liberty for dinner at Abay. This place has traditional Ethiopian food and it was really good. We were a little confused at first about how to eat the food since there was no silverware but we figured out that you have break pieces of this wrap like thing off and pick up the food with that... interesting and good.

Friday was Angela's birthday so we went to St. Claire Park in Greensburg for a Beatles cover band concert. It was pretty fun. It was free to get in and you were allowed to bring your own food and beer...not a bad deal at all!

Yesterday I went to Kennywood for my dad's work picnic. It was so crowded! I've never seen it that bad before. I ended up not staying all that long just because the lines were ridiculously long even it you just wanted to get food. Kennywood is now embracing throwing your gun on things, look at the picture above! I guess this is a good idea since people always thrown there gun on stuff there. After I came home from the park I had dinner at Soba with some HCI people to welcome Mary back. The dinner was awesome. I really like that place.

Today I got up and rode my bike into work to return a phone I was testing out. I was supposed to pick up another one but I guess Jason decided to bring it home. Not a big deal, I needed a good workout anyway after all of that Kennywood food yesterday, and trust me coming back home from Downtown to Squirrel Hill is a workout! It is supposed to be sunny around 4 so if that is true I may head over to Sandcastle for a short while, we'll see how it goes.

Ticket

I F-ing hate street cleaning. They don't even clean the streets.

Indian Rosie

I made this for Varnali. Doesn't she look like Rosie from the
Jetsons? Unfortunatly she is now hanging from a Carnegie Museum pass.

DMB!!!

Friday I went out for a bit on the Southside. I started out at the Library with Shawn. Kara joined us later. That place was pretty chill, it was my first time there. Amanda called me and her and Chrissy were at Carson City so we headed down there to meet up with them. Turns out that Amanda is friends with someone I used to work with freshman year at the Pete! It was good to see her. Later on we went to Elixir. That place was pretty cool but I stopped drinking at that point because I wanted to be good to go in the morning for Dave. I left shortly after and had some Pizza Sola. It was pretty good but $3.75 is pretty expensive for one piece if you ask me. On my way back to the car I saw Erin, Kelsie, and Lauren. They talked me into going in to Tiki Lounge with them. I hung out for a while then headed home.

Saturday I got up, had some lunch and went to Save-More with Shawn to pick up our three kegs. That was a lot of beer! We brought them back to his place and corn hole was already starting in the parking lot. The bus got there early so we packed it up and went to the Southside to pick up Kara and here peeps. Then it was off to Star lake. We were the first bus in the almost totally empty parking lot. I can't believe they let us in. We started tailgating immediately (even though we really already started on the bus.) We had corn hole, flip cup, and food. It was a good time. I also stopped over to Amanda and Chrissy's tailgate to hang with them for a while. We went in to the show right before Dave came on and got space right in front of the chain in the lawn. It was so steep and my feet were killing me by the end of the concert but it was well worth it. I switched back and forth between the two groups during the concert but it was cool, gave me some variety. The concert itself was great. Probably one of the best I've seen. A good mix between old and new. I am glad I remember the concert part this year ;-) This year there was definatly a lot of pot smoking going on, I think more than normal for a Dave concert. I'm pretty sure I had a contact high... I learned some new songs that I downloaded today. Altogether I was a really fun day, had and awesome time.

Sunday was father's day and I headed home to Irwin to hang out with the fam. Mike and I got dad a digital camera which he seemed to like. We had a Baskin Robin's cake which was a nice surprise since I thought we were getting Dairy Queen. Danielle came over later on to hangout as well. I am kinda jealous of my mom's porch garden...it is much better than mine. I wish I had some room for bigger pots.

This week is going to be a busy week:
  • Softball/going out for Shawn's going away tomorrow
  • Pirate game with the YPO Wednesday
  • Abay with Leslie on Thursday
  • Kennywood for Dad's picnic on Saturday
Should be a good week.

Cool clouds.

I saw Mike Tomlin!

Yesterday was a pretty interesting day with a bunch of happenings. My group decided to have lunch at the Carnegie Cafe with is located in the museums. It was really good and not all that expensive. I heard good things about this place and never went. There are so many other things I want to try there so I will defiantly go back soon.

Since we were already at the museum, we decided to go see the dinosaurs. It was cool and now I've finally got to see them after they came back from being redone. This little duck/dinosaur thing was my favorite!:
Here is another dinosaur:

Also yesterday they were taking down that crazy piece of art with the people walking up the pole. I wander if they are taking it down pertinently or if it was damaged by the storm:

When I got home I had a quick dinner and decided that I wanted to go to South Hills Village. It took me over an hour to get there! I don't know why traffic was so bad. On my way home I was getting thirsty for Thirsty Thursday. I called and emailed a few people and Erin said she would come out. We tied to go to Mad Mex but there was no parking anywhere so we went back to Squirrel Hill and went to Fanatics. I saw Tony from work there and Mike Tomlin! Apparently this is his "neighborhood bar." I knew he lived on Shady Ave. but was not sure where. It was cool being at the same little bar with him while he was sitting there sipping on his Gray Goose.

Erin stayed over since she works really close to where I live. I made chocolate chip pancakes, hot chocolate, and coffee this morning. It was pretty good and Erin dropped me off at school where I am writing this right now since I am here so early. The only bad thing was I did not get to go to the gym today, but maybe I will go after school. We'll see. Tomorrow is DMB and I am really hoping that it doesn't rain. Today we are supposed to get some crazy storms like we did two days ago, which is fine with me as long as it is all over by tomorrow...

Bugs, Wings, and Storms

Monday we had a softball game and it was probably one of the best evenings to play. The sun was out (forgot to wear my cap...grrr) and it was not hot or humid, just nice. Some of us decided to go to Archie's after the game for 15 cent wings. They were good as always. Shawn and Kara joined us and he promised he would play soon. Even though we had a lot of players on Monday, we all were not having a great game...

Tuesday was cool because I got to start the day at Starbucks on Forbes and Shady. So instead of going to the gym like I usually do in the AM, I took Alissa's advice and went on a bike ride through Schenley Park, then came home, showered, and went to the user test at Starbucks. Lunch had a nice change of pace since we go to eat in Squirrel Hill. Anne, ZQ, and I went to Aladdin's. Good stuff. Also on yesterday morning, I found this cool little bug on my cucumber plant:

Even though I had to do laundry on Tuesday night, I didn't mind for two reasons. This is the first time in a long time that I did not have to iron a bunch of work shirts, and it was the first night that I really had nothing to do and was able to just hang out for the evening in over a week.

Today it rained like hell! I was sitting on my porch for a while reading, eating dinner, and watching the rain. Then all of a sudden it really started raining hard. My porch was pretty much flooded:
At this point I decided to go to the Waterfront to take care of some things...Murray and Forward was flooded like crazy and it was even worse on the way home. There was water coming from everywhere. Some girl even ran out into the street trying to catch something floating down the street. Whatever it was, it was moving really fast. I think she caught it though. I am not back home nice a dry hoping that all of the rain will be over by Saturday in time for it to be nice for Dave.

Pens Parade Traffic

Although I was not Downtown yesterday for the parade, I can say that I
was there for the Steelers parade. It took me 2 hours to get home to
Squirrel Hill after I left work at 4PM! But that is not the reason I
am writing this email. Bus problems like this happen every day in
Oakland especially around CMU. At the end of the day from about 4-6
there are plenty of times (during spring and fall semesters at Pitt
and CMU) where I have counted 6 or 7 busses pass the stop before
picking anyone up (sometime up to 45 minutes at prime stops like
Forbes and Morewood.) CMU gets it the worst because by the time the
bus makes it there it is already full of Downtown workers and Pitt
students. I and many other people I know called Port Authority
numerous times about this but they really don't seem to care. I think
the reason is because they will not see anymore money from the people
who ride at Pitt or CMU if they add more busses. Pitt and CMU
students have to pay the Port Authority ever semester thought their
tuition whether they ride the bus or not so why should the Port
Authority provide more busses? I think this is a real problem and am
glad that some other people got to experience what it is like
yesterday. Maybe this will at least get some people talking about
solving this problem.

WORDS FOR OUR TIME!

Good advice sent to me from Jess. I think schools really do need to stop doing this to kids. They are all going to (and already are starting to) turn out like total weirdoes that don’t know anything about the real world

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1
: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2
: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3
: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4
: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5
: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity..

Rule 6
: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7
: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8
: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9
: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time..

Rule 10
: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11
: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

A Nice Semi-Relaxing Weekend

It was nice to slow it down just a little this weekend after having such a busy week full of evening events last week. Friday night was of course game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. At first I didn't even feel like I wanted to go out that day but then as the day when on I felt like I wanted to. I went over to Kara's with Shawn and we were going to go to Mario's. None of us really felt like going out at that point so we just watched the game there. It was cool because I actually got to pay attention to the whole game. We ordered pizza and got some beer. The pizza was from Michael's. I never had it before and it was pretty good. After the game Hanna stumbled in and was wasted. She was cracking me up talking about Bowmaster being a "ginger" (which he is not) and sleeping in his boxer-briefs. She fell out of the chair and was crawling on the floor... Always a good time with Hanna :-)

Saturday I went to Trees with Shawn and then did some long overdue grocery shopping. After that I headed over to Sandcastle to get my season pass. I wanted to go late in the day so I did not have to wait in a huge line. I made some cookies for Anne's cookout (that happened today) as well. Erin came over and we decided to relive alcoholic Slurpie night from freshman year. Only this time I think the liquor we used was a little better.

We ended up not wanting to stay in so we headed to the Southside to see if you could find the Pens anywhere. As we were on Carson, a crowd of people took to the street and blocked the whole thing off. The Pens were above Mario's flashing the Stanley cup out of the window! We were stuck for a little while but Erin managed to get her car out and we quickly got a parking space at Giant Eagle. We hurried back over hoping that we didn't miss too much. When we got there they were holding the cup out the window and spaying people on the street with champagne. We were not sure who all was up there but we saw Staal and Crosby for sure. Crosby is pictured below:
All of the bars were dead because everyone wash hoping the Pens would come back out after they got out of the windows. We actually got to sit right at the bar at Town Tavern.

Today I took my first trip to Sandcastle for the season. It was great, I was reading my book by the pool and jumping in when I got too hot. I even had my first corn-dog of the year. mmmmm. There really are some nice river views from the park (note the iPhone camera does not due it justice):
I came back home and installed 3.0 software on my iPhone. It is nice but does not have all of the cool features that the 3G S phone will have... After that I walked over to Anne's for a cookout that they had inside. It was pretty good.

Tomorrow starts a new week and there is only 1 softball game. Tomorrow at 7. I think we might be going to Archie's for 15 cent wings after...Oh no...could this be the start of another crazy week? ;-)

Pens!

I am going to get used to this every Friday this summer.

Going out every (week) Night...

So after my drunken Monday night, I had to go out on Tuesday because the Pens were playing. I'm so glad that I did because they were awesome! I went to Hems and met up with Shawn, Kara, and some other X-PT people. I am pretty psyched for tomorrow's game!

Wednesday we had a softball game and we ended up doing really good (for us.) Andrew hit a grand slam and I had a home run. We actually got over six runs that inning (this is a first for us!) KK had two hits and even scored a run. HCI might actually win a game by the time this thing is over.
That night was Tobias' last night in the country and he wanted to go out to Mad Mex with KK and I. I ended up going along with some other people who were around that lab. I got a honeydew margarita which was good but I don't think I will be getting that again. What I was dropping people off, KK tried to get out at Varnali's. I was like KK, this is not your house. She did here "What? Noooo." haha, it was funny.

Today I met up with Daniel Downtown. It was strange being back down there after so long. We came back to Oakland because she wanted a tour of Pitt and CMU. We walked along both campuses and had dinner at Fuel and Fuddle. She was able to get a bunch of cool pictures that will hopefully be online soon. This picture is Schenley Plaza from the top of the Cathedral.

Tomorrow is game seven! I can't wait, we better win! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens! Let's Go Pens!

Road Trip!

Friday afternoon I got an email from Adam asking me to go to the Pen's game with him in Detroit on Saturday. I of course said hell yes! I woke up Saturday morning and drove to his place in Cleveland. We hung out there for a bit then headed out to Detroit. On the way I got to eat at my first Tim Horton's meal. It was pretty good. We got to the arena a little before game time and headed in. The heckling started right away. The whole Stanley Cup playoff experience was pretty cool. They had it all setup to play movies on the ice before the game started...even though it was of Red Wings players... The game started out pretty good. We were at Detroit's goal fro pretty much the first half of the first period. Then we had a power play were we did absolutely terrible and the game went downhill from there. We ended up loosing 5-0 and it was really disappointing. The Red Wings fans basically made fun of us the whole way back to the car. We really couldn't say anything back to them since we were basically the only Pittsburgh fans around. We now had a 3 hour drive back to Cleveland. I'll tell you what about Detroit, people aren't kidding when they say there is abandoned building everywhere. There literally is and we were not even in the bad sections of town. I would have loved to do some urban exploring in these buildings. We passed my the Motor City Casino and it looked pretty damn cool at night, it would definitely be able to compete with Vegas casinos from outside looks anyway. We finally made it back to Adam's around 3 AM and I passed the fuck out.

Sunday we got up and had breakfast at this place that is like Pamela's it was really good. I had lemon-regatta pancakes. I left Adam's and made a short stop at a mall I like around there and also decided to check out Trader Joe's since they have wine and beer in Ohio.

Last night was a little crazy. Bowmaster was in town and Shawn invited me to hang out with them. He gave me directions to Kara's softball game in the Hill District but I could not find it. I literally drove around the Hill for and hour and still could not find the place. All of the druggies on the street corners were looking at me like I was crazy. Shawn called and told me they were going to continue drinking at Archie's so I headed there to meet up with them. I never did find the kickball field. I got to Archie's before everyone else so I stareted drinking...I needed a drink after all that frustration of not finding the damn kickball field. That was done in 5 minsutes and I was already on my second. I wanted to try to take it slow but before I knew it I was on my fourth beer and everyone was trying to convince me to stay out and just stay over at Kara's. I was like what the fuck, I'll drink. That started the bar crawl for the night. We went around to a bunch of different bars and had beer and shots. There was hardly anyone [girls] out I guess becasue it was a Monday night... But that was not slowing us down. Shawn left at some point then it was just me and Bowmaster. We did some more drinking and somehow decided to go to Tom's Diner. I had a BLT and he had some big pasta dinner. He left twice to go do shots while we were waiting for our food (haha, I love this kid!) We got though our food at Tom's and were on our way back to Kara's when we decided to do one more shot (and yes it was at Mario's even though I hate that place.) We stumble back to Kara's and pass out.

The next thing I know it is 6:30 in the morning and Kara is leaving for work. I decide to go take a walk of shame back to my car. Everyone was waking around all dressed for work and there I was walking to my car looking like death. I made it home and luckily felt much better after a shower and a coffee. All and all it was a pretty good night for a Monday!

Walk of Shame

I am currently doing a walk of shame through Southside. Everyone is
going to work and I look like hell.

Lots to Talk About

A Small Reunion

Tuesday I had lunch with Igor. I haven't sen him in a while and he is now working for CMU. He said he might play softball with us which is good since he is American and knows the game. Tuesday night I ended up meeting Adam after the Pen's game. We decided to go out to Silky's in Squirrel Hill. It was cool getting to catch up with him. I will have to go visit him in Ohio sometime soon.

Cold, Wet, and Miserable

The softball game on Wednesday was terrible. It was raining and cold for the whole game; I was literally shivering. My last time up to bat my hands were so cold I could not hold on to the bat. I swung pretty hard and the bat ended up in the outfield! Thank God it did not hit someone, it could have cause some serious damage. My hands hurt like hell after the bat slid out of my hand. I could not wait to get home. As soon as I got there, I took a showers and my hands were still cold when I got out...I was spent. I decided to watch a movie and call it quits after that.

7% of me is Fat

Yesterday me and some of my group went to the health fair to do some research for our project. One of the things they had were screenings. I was pretty excited that I only had 7% body fat. The nurse must have been too since she gave me her number after she did the test ;-) Even though I was feeling pretty good about that, somehow I managed to strike out in slow pitch softball! Not my proudest moment ever.

Lets Go Pens!

We all decided to go to Buffalo Blues to watch the Pen's game after softball. It was a pretty good time and I got to have a bunch of wings. They also had $2 Coronas...nice. In the second period we decided to go to Oh Ya! to get some ice cream. I haven't been there in a while and I got something great. It was called Smor' Bee. It was vanilla icecream with golden grams, marshmellow, dark chocolate chips, and honey. Man oh man! We went back to Bufallo Blues with our ice cream and watched the rest of the game, even had a few more beers...not the best choice after the icecream but whatever. The Pens ended up winning and everyone was pretty phyced. Now we only need two more wins!

Eggless Muffins

Yesterday I decided to take the bike out for a spin.  I did about 16.3 miles along the North Shore and through Manchester.  It was a nice ride and it was not too hot at all, a perfect day for riding actually.  I stopped at the Wendy's in the Northside because I had to try the coffee toffee twisted Frosty that I saw multiple commercials for during the Pen's game on Saturday.  I don't know if it was because I was I was riding for a while or what, but that thing was good.

Today we were really busy with our spring report because  we got a lot of comments about it.  I was happy with the way everyone was working together so I tried my hand at some eggless muffins tonight for tomorrow morning.  They were eggless because Varnizzle does not eat eggs.  I used what I had and made strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry muffins with cinnamon streusel.  I tried one and they were pretty good.  They actually look and almost taste like regular muffins.
On a not so good note, I literally almost cut my little toe off tonight!   There was a pan chillin' on the floor and I tripped over it.  No big deal because I am clumsy and always trip but, apparently my toe lined up exactly right with the pouring lip of the pan and it took a huge chunk of my toe out!  It hurt like hell and looks kinda gross.  I will never leave one of these pans on the floor again!  I can't even talk about it on here with out reliving it in my mind.   Ouch!
