Last Weeks Happenings

I might have been jumping the gun a little bit after my last update saying that my elbows were fixed. After I started to do some more trice p intensive excessive they were at it again, but no where near at the point they were two weeks ago. I think they are going to be fine but I guess I should not push it too hard right away.

This week at work I asked about going to BlackBerry training during my spring break from school (March 9-13) and it looks like I will be going after all. I will be in Raleigh North Carolina for training for that week. I am looking forward to being in 60 degree weather while I am down there.

New Bus

I had a nice surprise when I got on the bus today, it was a new one. Everything was so clean and had that fresh new bus smell! Haha

My after dinner card today.

This Morning

The sun is out, the birds are chirping, and it is 54 degrees at the bus stop this morning. It almost feels like spring out. I wish this nice weather would last!

Downtown from Upper Campus

Curry Chicken Salad

Last night I had some curry chicken salad from Whole Foods. It was
really good. I love Whole Foods and I was overdue to go there. I also
got some fresh ground honey roasted peanut butter which was also
great. That place never disapponts.

Eight Minutes

I ran for 8 minutes in a row today!  It does not sound like much but that is good progress for me!  :-)

Me Elbows are Fixed!

Bar Room
Friday night we went out to Bar Room for all you can drink 8-10 for $10. Not a bad deal. We ended up staying a little longer than that. I saw Dave and Randie there too. It was Randie's bachelor party. It was good to see them. I need to plan a night to hang out with the boys from GBG sometime soon. After Bar Room Shawn, Kara, her sister, and I went to Southside for some more drinks. After the girls decided to go to Mario's me and Shawn went back to Kara's. I then went to get a bus and of course it never showed up. I had to take a cab back to Oakland then drive back to Squirrel Hill only to find no close parking spaces. I was not happy.

Nate's Birthday
Saturday I drove to Maryland for Nate's 7th birthday party. It was nice to see the fam although I was in somewhat of a strange mood the whole time and I am not even sure why. I ended up taking my grandma home afterwords back to Monroeville. When I was almost home, I got pulled over for speeding! I was so pissed, this is the first ticket I've had since I was in high school. At least the cop was cool and did not write my actual speed on the ticket. I just got something about not following a traffic control device. No points. :-)

Charlie Murdock's
After the ticket fiasco I went out to Charlie Murdock's and could not stop thinking about the stupid ticket for a long time. After I had enough drinks though I started to have fun and forgot about the ticket for a little while. I was a pretty good time. This is the first time I was there that I did not have to worry about driving home in a long time.

Nothing very special happened on Sunday. Grocery shopping and cardio by day, SoLearn meeting by night.

Bench Press
Yesterday I decided would be a good time to see if my elbow was cured from lifting and it was! I actually got to do chest. I was pretty happy so I should be back to a normal lifting schedual now. We'll see how things go today once I do triceps.

A Great Protein Shake!

Today was a busy day.  Had a bunch of stuff to run around and do this morning such as cramming in some reading which I should have done last night while watching The Godfather with Shawn and Kara (I finally saw it!) getting my blood taken at 7:30 AM at Quest Diagnostic to go along with my annual physical, doing some PPG work, then meeting with my project management group to work on my final project (due tonight at 12 AM...still working on it via email with the group)  I had class and some meetings then came back and did some more PPG things.

Today was kinda crappy while at the gym but afterwords I felt like I had a decent workout at least.  It started off bad with me doing terrible on the treadmill but Shawn did bad too so I suppose we are just running too much.  Then intervals pretty much kicked my ass.
By the time we got to power cleans I was spent.  When I came home I had the best
protein shake, it had:
  • Skim milk (forgot to include in the picture)
  • Vanilla Muscle Milk
  • Creatine
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Coconut extract
I made this the other day without the coconut, and it was good, but man the coconut extract made this great!

Also today I finished my mom's pepperoni bread...this time she used hot pepper cheese, I really liked that new addition.
I need to get back to this project now.  I am waiting to see what the rest of the groups thinks so far before I can submit the final copy.  Then I have a final in this class one week from today, I can't believe the class is over already!  These minis are crazy, first time I ever took one.

This is what I have to deal with on an average day every time I a 61. Today it was a 61C and this is actually not so bad compared to how it is sometimes...

Running Update

Day 4

Today I ran for another 1/2 hour and did better than yesterday! I ran for four minutes straight and then did more interval running/walking. I was able to do more running than walking this time though. I got 2 1/2 miles today where yesterday I only got about 2. I know this is not that good, but hey, it's progress and I am glad that I am making it.

On a related note...I am starting my second week of being on injured reserve :-( I can still do some things as long as it does not involve triceps (elbow pain from previous post.) I think I would be okay if I went ahead and lifted anyways but I want to make sure I am 100% better so this does not mess me up for too long. I want to bench... I think I might be going through withdrawal...I told you I was addicted!

Back to the Bus

Well after gettingto walk to school both days last week, it is back to
the bus this week. It is cold and snowing. I am so ready for spring
now after last week!

Weekend Recap

Not much to say here!  I went to happy hour with Amanda to Mad Mex.  Had an awesome margarita and an okay chicken quesadilla (now I remember why I don't order those very often from there.)  We had a good time and that ended up being the highlight of my weekend.  After that I went home and decided to watch a movie from Netflix, Natural born Killers. it was okay.  By that time a had a bit of a head ache from the tequila and beer and did not feel like going out so I went to bed at 10:30!

Had a group meeting at 10 on Saturday, then went to the Pitt game with Jason.  We were supposed to have court-side seats with free food but it ended up only be regular seats, which was fine it was still fun.  We ended up sitting next to Melissa Hart, I don't like her because all of her commercials are negative, my favorite one is the one where she says if you vote for Jason Altmire, your house will explode.  Of course after the game I did not do anything since it was Valentine's Day and as usual I had no one to spend it with.  I ended up watching Roman Holiday on On Demand and went to bed around 12.  I know this weekend was so lame, I hate Valentine's Day.

Today I got up and was at work by 7:30 for the maintenance window.  Everything went as planned for the most part so I was out of there by 10 which was nice.  Went to the gym today also and did legs.  Before lifting with legs it was day three of my "Am am going to be a runner program."  Shawn had to talk me into going on the treadmill today, but I did.  I walked 1:30 and ran 1:00 back and forth for 30 minutes for a total of a little over 2 miles.  I know that is pretty pathetic but it is a start I guess.  Hopefully I will get better soon because I feel like a big looser walking on the treadmill at the gym. On a positive note, I made it up to 185 on dead lifts today.  I had a project management group meeting tonight at 5 and we were outta there by 7 which was a nice surprise.  I love how non-HCI groups work quickly, although I cannot complain about my project group so far this semester our meetings never last really long [knocking on wood.]  An now I'm back at home and am probably going to pay some bills and enter receipts into Quicken.

Heres hoping that next weekend will be wild and out of control because this weekend surly was not and I need a little bit of that in my life right now.

How to use a BlackBerry

Blueberry coffee and blueberry donut. Mmmm.

It is official, I am out on injured reserve :-( Went to the gym today to do arms and figured triceps would give me issues, but biceps did too! Damn it I was so pissed, I was just gonna do bis if tris hurt my elbows but damn it, both of them did. So I did the rowing machine for a bit and got frustrated with myself and left. I am planning on not doing anything stressful to the elbows until Monday, hopefully things will be cool by then.
Before I got into lifting mode though, it was day two of running...ha...if that's what you want to call it... I did all kinds of leg stretches today to see if that would help, but no after about 5 or so minutes, I was done. I did the elliptical instead while Shawn ran. Hopefully if I keep trying at running my ankles will get used to it and I will be fine.

Enough with all of this bad work out news, I'm starting to sound like a complainer when I'm really just frustrated.

Not much else exciting to report today except I finally made it to the store to get some food. I went to East End Food Co-Op and SureSave in Bloomfield, quite a difference in the two stores, but I was happy with what I got.

Nice Days in the Middle of Winter are Great!

Today was pretty great, it was in the mid 60s all day!  It was so nice when I got out of project class that I did not even need to wear a jacket!  I was so bummed that I had to go home and "work from home" instead of getting to play outside.  Once I got home though fist thing I did was open the windows and put on my shorts and tank top even though I was not going to the gym for three more hours, it felt good.

Then I decided I should make and iced espresso...I haven't had one of those since who knows when

Working with the windows open was great, I can't wait until spring comes.

Went to the gym today and did some miscellaneous stuff.  I could not do the pushups because of my elbows but everything else was fine.  I started my quest to become a runner so great.  My ankles were killing me...should have done Paul's exercises...maybe I will start those tonight.  I am going to try and take it easy this week at the gym and will hopefully be good to go next week.  Tomorrow is bis and tris but I don't think the tris will be happening for me.

Somehow I do not mind waiting for the bus when it is 63 degrees!

It was so stuffy today in Project Managment I could not stand it. So
far project class feels better. I hope it stays this way.

Lifting Blues

So for the past couple of times I have been at the gym, my elbows (of all things) are killing me.  I don't know what is going on.  I've been making some great progress and maybe I just need a rest but it is killing me to take it easy when I am there.  It seams like any time I extend my arm out like in a bench press for example at the very top of the exercise my elbows just really start to hurt...weird!  Shawn seams to think it is fatigued triceps and he is probably right, I just need to not work them for a few days, but that is easier said than done, I am addicted to going to the gym, I am turning into one of those people who have to go all the time, but I just love being there, and I feel gross if I don't go.

Today Shawn was talking about training for a 5k this spring which I would love to do only it involves running.  I always want to start running, but I never do because I am not good at it, but I am going to try doing Paul's ankle exercises and run on the treadmill much more often to see if I can change that.  I would really like to not only do the 5k but also be able to call myself a runner.

Today I booked my flight and room for Las Vegas for Sara's wedding in May.  We are flying US Airways and staying at the Flamingo.  I was originally just going to go with Erin since neither one of us have dates but then she asked Lauren to go so I thought I should as well even if it was not a "date."  I asked Shawn who might come but already had plans to possibly go with some people from PT so I asked my brother and we will be going together.  I hope that the PT crew does come though, it will be fun having a bunch of people there that we know.

That's it for now, I need to go rest up these elbows!  haha  :-)

I decided to walk to school today. It was a little brisk, but well
worth it.

Po Po

The police finally came today to ticket people who were parked on the wrong side of my street (they came twice actually.)  It is about time, it has been getting pretty bad here there are cars all over the street and it really makes it hard to get up and down the street when it is icy.  I also noticed that they finally started ticketing people who park too close to the corner of the street as well, this is also great because it is really hard to get out of my street without putting your car the whole way in the middle of the street before you can see if anyone else is coming.  Usually they only ticket cars on this street once every couple months or so, but I am hopeful since they came twice today that maybe they are going to start cracking down.  Pittsburgh is always talking about needing money, this seems to me like a really easy way to make it, just come around and ticket people who blatantly disregard signs and make it hard for everyone else who does follow the rules to get around.  One other good place to get some money would be to start fining people who don't shovel their sidewalk...there is a shitload of people who don't, there are even entire apartment complexes that leave their sidewalks unshoveled for days!

Sorry for the poor quality picture I took it through my window really fast because I did not want the guy to see me.

Crazy Old Man

This is the crazy old man that was sitting by me at Srarbucks today. At first when I sat down, he made me switch seats so that I was not looking at him. He talked to himself the whole time while scribbling random notes on his napkins. He also wandered around the place playing with the blinds the whole time as well and I think he might have yelled at someone for standing in the wrong place. Not sure what his deal was.

I am optimistic about the weather after today. I can't wait. Man was
it cold at the bus stop today.

Fuck the Steeler's Parade!

Wow, what a Terrible afternoon!!

Man...where do I even begin?  It all started when I went down to see the parade.  I went downstairs around 12 to go check things out.  When I got to the street there was absolutely nowhere to go, the crowed was packed a block deep up to the road, there was no squeezing through.  I tried to go down a few streets but that did not help either, I just figured whatever, I will just go back to the office and watch this thing online which I did on WTAE's website.  After watching for a little bit I found out why I could not find a space...there were 300,000 people Downtown for this thing.  No big deal, I watched it online and it was not that great anyways.

Throughout the afternoon I was getting a little nervous that I might not be able to get a bus home, so I called Port Authority and they said no problem I would be perfectly fine at 4:00...right...this is what I saw out the window:

Well, as time went on, things looked okay outside so I stopped worrying about it.  I went outside to the bus stop and realized that the Boulevard of the Allies was closed, 2 hours after the parade was over right in the middle of rush hour!!  I knew this was not going to be good.  I stated walking up Forbes to see if I could catch the bus somewhere else and that road was closed too!  I walked the whole way up to Chattem Center and waited 15 or so more minutes for my bus, then wouldn't you know Forbes opened and the bus continued the rest of the way into town very very slowly.  We finally made it back to the Boulevard and it was closed still!  We circled around Downtown TWO MORE time trying to find a way out then finally we made it on to the Boulevard and came to a dead stop in front of the YMCA for 10 MINUTES!  I literally bit my hand (hard) on the bus I was so mad.  After being on the bus for about 45 minutes, we finally made it out of town.  With all of the waiting and driving around it took me 1 1/2 hours to get back to Squirrel Hill which is 5 miles away!  I was so mad because I missed getting to workout with Shawn for the first time in like a month and I really wanted a spotter today.

When I got home I screamed as loud as I could  AHHHHHHHH!  I figured I was going to go burn all of this anger at the gym even if it was at shitty Skibo by myself.  I got to Skibo and no parking spaces...DAMN IT!  I was so mad that I was pounding the steering wheel so hard (FUCK!!!!!!) and before I knew it I was on my way back home as fast as I could drive.  After arriving in front of my apartment I just stopped and put my head on the steering wheel for a minute...breath Nick...  I turned around and calmly drove back to the gym and luckily found a space right up front.

I had the best workout after all of that!  man I did great, I benched 205 for 9/ 1/2 reps my first set so that really got me motivated to do good for the rest of my workout which I did and finally started to feel better about the day.  Man I feel GREAT now, what a good workout!  Let this be a lesson to myself and anyone else that when you are really pissed, go directly to the gym, not only will you have a great workout, you will make your worries disappear.

Sorry for all the negatives in this post, I was just really looking forward to having a spotter/workout buddy again today so I could have a good lift, and I just really started to flip out, man was I stressed!  And it turns out I had a great workout anyway :-)

Wow, the Steelers won another Super Bowl! It was a fun time again just like it was a few years ago. I could not break tradition and had to continue watching the last few games at Megan and Justin's house. This time there was a lot of good food, mmmm. After the win, Alison, Eric. and I decided to go to the Southside for a little bit of fun. Alison had the great idea of Going down Greenfield Avenue to get to the Hot Metal Bridge the back way and we were able to get to the Southside with no problem. When we got there, there were a lot of people just as we expected but it was very very tame compared to how Oakland was last time...a little disapointing. Here is a picture of East Carson Street:

And here is a picture of me stading in front of a crowd singing random victory songs coming from a the stereo of bunch of people in a second floor apartment:

Another disapointing thing was that all of the bars were either closed or closing! WTF? Last time in Oakland we stayed in Boomerangs for a long time after the game. O well, it was still fun to get to be a part of it, next time though I for sure am going back to Oakland. No one knows how to party like good old Pitt!

One other funny note was this article from the Post Gazette this morning:
Council changes city's name to Sixburgh
Tuesday, February 03, 2009

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl may have changed his name, but Pittsburgh City Council one-upped him today by ceremonially renaming the entire city.

In a proclamation crafted by Councilman Bruce Kraus, the city's lawmakers commended the "open, practical and efficient management" of the Super Bowl-winning Steelers.

"The council of the City of Pittsburgh does hearby commend the Rooney family for bringing notoriety to the City of Pittsburgh," Mr. Kraus read, with the other members of council arrayed about him, before "officially designating the City of Pittsburgh in 2009 as the City of Sixburgh."

Mr. Ravenstahl ceremonially renamed himself Steelerstahl prior to the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The guy at Giant Eagle had this lemon on his register...awesome
